The Imo State Government through the office of Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Kingsley Ononuju (Ekwedashike) issued a Press Release on Tuesday, 7th July 2020.
The Release reads;
“In line with the shared prosperity Government of his Excellency, the Governor of Imo state, Sen. Hope Uzodimma has directed the opening of various market in all 27 LGA’s in the state.
The directive was approved after extensive meeting between Gov. Hope Uzodimma, Commissioner for Commerce & Industry Hon. Barr Kingsley Ononuju, ISMATA Chairman Chief Don-Chris Okere and various market leaders in all 27 LGAs of the state under the aegies of Imo State Market Amalgamated Traders Association (ISMATA) who paid him courtesy visit at Government house today.
Gov. Uzodimma in a bid to cushion the effect of hunger in the state and ameliorate the hardship being felt by the Traders during the 3 months market shutdown, approved for opening of the markets, but must continue to comply with Covid-19 protocol, including provision of sanitizers at various points in the markets, public safety guidlines/ awareness by the market leaders to their members and complusory use of face mask by their members and buyers in their various Markets in the state.
The markets are to open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and in long-run, the Covid 19 protocols in all the markets will be reviewed after two weeks sequel to the full re-opening of the markets.
Gov. Uzodimma later constituted a 3-man Committee comprising of Commissioner for Special Projects, Chairman of Board of Internal Revenue (BIR), and Special Adviser on IGR to monitor total compliance of the Traders. They are saddled also to arrange the traders towards obtaining post Covid-19 palliatives/assistance from the government to assist them in their businesses through the submission of the names of their member’s and submission to appropriate quarter’s for documentation.”
