Yesterday, 19th August 2020 was World Humanitarian Day celebration. It is a day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate aid workers who risk their lives rendering humanitarian services. The 2020 version is special because of the events of the Covid 19 pandemic in which not a few number of aid workers have risked their lives trying to save that of others.

The day is also celebrated to create awareness about those affected by crisis across the world. The 19 August date was said to be chosen as it coincided with anniversary of the Canal Hotel bombing in Bagdad in which then United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Sergio Veira de Mello and 20 others were killed.

To mark this special day, the Office of Her Excellency, First Lady of Imo State, Barr. (Mrs) Chioma Uzodimma, through the Ministry of Gender and Vulnerable group, in collaboration with the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Development Goals (SDG) and Humanitarian Services was in the forefront of this year’s Humanitarian Day Celebration in Imo State.

The ministry led by its Commissioner, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu and Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Development Goals (SDG) and Humanitarian Services, Hon. Christina Ude and the Director General Imo foundation Mrs Beulah chukwuma stormed Umuneke Ngor Rehabilitation Center and showered Loads of palliatives on the inmates on behalf of Her Excellency. The highlight of the day was sharing cooked delicious home meal with all inmates, singing, dancing and praying with the inmates for their quick recovery.

The Commissioner assured the inmates and staff that Her Excellency, and the prosperity Government of Governor Hope Uzodimma, places high premium on their welfare and that of all Imo citizens. She encouraged the inmates to take their medicines and complete their treatment regimen, so they can be discharged home as soon as possible.

The ministry used the occasion of this year’s celebration to call on the well to do in our society to help the less privileged in their midst. It is also calling for all hands to be on deck to fight the hydra headed monster of abuses in our society such as; rape, defilement, incest, domestic violence, Female Genital Mutilation, obnoxious widowhood practices and all forms of dehumanizations.
