The Chief Field Officer for UNICEF, Enugu, Dr. Ibrahim Conteh says UNICEF is rolling out five years country program with a focus on three aspects of the child’s right.
Dr. Conteh, who disclosed this while briefing Newsmen at a one day zonal engagement/planning meeting with implementing partners held in Enugu birth registration, immunization and technical support in social protection of the child as three aspects of the right of the child that would be accorded priority in the new country programmes.
Dr Conteh expressed the view that for a difference to be made in the life of a child, attention must be paid to the child’s basic rights in the areas of nutrition, education, water, housing and information.
He said that UNICEF intends to map out specific work plan for the media to ensure wider coverage of its programmes and called on the governments to show greater commitment in budgeting and concern for the welfare of children, women and the venerable in society.
Presenting a report on key findings in the 2016/2017 Nigeria Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, Mrs. Maurine Okolo of UNICEF identified use of insecticide treated nets, exclusive breast feeding, primary school enrolment and birth registration as areas where governments need to focus for its sustenance.
The meeting, which featured group work presentations and planning for 2018 programme of activities had participants drawn from Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra and Benue States.
